Kide
Light, an object of desire in Finland, is the essence of the kide project. All living things are attracted to light. We all thrive in it, bask in it, and when it is in short supply, we think of ways to incorporate more of it into our lives. The populations of that world the reside in the higher latitudes, such as Finland, crave it. Besides the physical and psychological attributes of light, we enjoy the artfulness of light. The play of light and dark. The ever changing design from shadow. The building volume, was established through sun shading diagrams and the concept of human interaction. The building opens to the south to capture as much light as possible and then lifts up to create an outdoor public space. The building blurs the boundaries between its site and the neighboring school to produce a visual flow. Those interacting with the space are given a picturesque and unique vista of the city. The interior of the building attempts to create a space that flows, allowing the visitors to circulate in the primary program space (library) enjoying unique vantage points to both the interior and the exterior. The floors plates shift to orient the occupant to the many vistas. The subtle shift also creates a variety of surfaces for the light to cast shadows upon. While the space stays the same, the lighting conditions change throughout the year. This provide the visitor with a exceptional experience every time they enter the building. The play of light is also experienced in the reflections captured by the three dimensional grid of the glass curtain wall. It attempts to reflect a variety of views giving the casual observer a unique experience with every interaction.
